Meg called into the school principal’s office
“The rooms were large, with welcoming dimensions,” says Shohan, the production designer. “And the layout was right,” adds Alison Taylor. “You could see the lab from the kitchen, and Mrs. Whatsit from the stairway.” The art department would make adjustments to the house, but this basic geography would work for the cameras. In addition, since this house was near a school and other houses, it would be plausible that Meg, Calvin, and Charles Wallace could walk from one place to another on their own.
The residents of the house moved out for three months, all for a two-week shoot. It took three weeks to prepare it to look like the Murrys lived there, and no detail was too small to escape the notice of Shohan’s team.
Set decorator Elizabeth Keenan remembers, “Ava, Naomi, and I talked at length about the Murry characters and how we should visually tell their story, making this film look unique while being respectful to the classic, well-loved book. The Murry house itself is almost another character. Education and travel are more important to this family than acquiring material goods, thus the home reflects a broad mixture of cultural and scientific interests, with music being a central focus.”
Within the house, she decorated several individual rooms, from the kitchen to the family’s bedrooms. “For the set of Meg’s attic bedroom, it was important to depict that occupying that specific room was a privilege and not teenage exile,” says Keenan. “We carved out a niche for her amongst family storage and items left over from childhood, including the old ping-pong table and rocking horse noted in Madeleine L’Engle’s book. We covered her attic bedroom walls with book reports, school projects, and posters of strong, intellectual female images in the areas of mathematics and the sciences: a poster from an Ada Byron Lovelace play, images of astronaut Dr. Mae C. Jemison, mathematician Marjorie Lee Browne, physicist Katherine Johnson, Shirley Ann Jackson, and more. A love of Einstein, Carl Sagan, and Kurt Vonnegut would have also inspired her and helped guide her self-discovery.”
